The Bays Precinct is a unique place. It is a story of Sydney’s many parts – commerce, industry, leisure, housing and water activities. It sits at the intersection of the CBD, Sydney’s magnificent and iconic harbour and the beginning of Sydney’s expansive western suburbs.

The Bays Precinct consists of approximately 95 hectares of government owned land, some of it degraded and underutilised, 5.5 kilometres of harbour and 94 hectares of waterways, and sits within 2 kilometres of the Sydney CBD. It includes sites such as the heritage-listed White Bay Power Station, Glebe Island, White Bay, Rozelle Bay, Rozelle Rail Yards and Blackwattle Bay including the Sydney Fish Market.

What is the Bays Precinct Urban Transformation Program?

The Bays Precinct Urban Transformation Program is a 25 year program that focuses on the transformation of 95 hectares of land and 94 hectares of waterways within 2 kilometres of the Sydney CBD. It will guide the urban transformation of The Bays Precinct and is led by UrbanGrowth NSW.

Where is The Bays Precinct Urban Transformation Program up to?

UrbanGrowth NSW has released the Transformation Plan: The Bays Precinct, Sydney, a plan for The Bays Precinct that will provide direction for the transformation of the precinct over the next 20 to 30 years. The Transformation Plan builds on previous work done by government agencies, The Bays Precinct Taskforce and the local community. The Plan will consider feedback received on the Transforming City Living: The Bays Precinct Discussion Paper and be informed by great ideas received from the community and industry during a Call For Great Ideas held in mid 2015.

The time is right to bring the planning and development work in The Bays Precinct together into one office so there is one voice, one plan and one vision in government. UrbanGrowth NSW is ideally placed to deliver the transformation of The Bays Precinct by providing the leadership and transparency needed to make the transformation of The Bays Precinct a reality.

UrbanGrowth NSW is leading a whole-of-government approach which includes the following NSW Government agencies: Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, NSW Department of Planning and Environment, Government Property NSW, Transport for NSW including Roads and Maritime Services, Infrastructure NSW, Port Authority of NSW, NSW Treasury and NSW Trade and Investment. The Bays Precinct program team is also collaborating with NSW Health and NSW Department of Education & Communities.

UrbanGrowth NSW is also working closely with local government, industry, community and other stakeholders to deliver Sydney’s largest urban transformation program since the creation of the Sydney Olympics site at Homebush Bay.
